Working Class Hero - Lennon - teegee November 16th 2008 8:07

I made this vid because of Tim's recent Lennon post. You can thank Knoxville for reminding me.
Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - knoxville November 16th 2008 8:22
i cant decide which is more awesome.. the fact that i caused this amazing cover to happen... or the amazing cover itself... that was awesome dude.. we must go on tour together as a lennon tribute band.. lol
Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - Mitch November 16th 2008 8:39

Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - kingsrv November 16th 2008 9:37
As we approach the 28th anniversery of the loss of one of the greatest songwriters of my time, we get two seperate renditions of two of his greatest songs. Thanks Tim and TG for reminding me of how much I enjoyed Lennons music, lyrics, and art.
Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - Ian November 16th 2008 10:39
Awesome Tod, I love the sound of that Martin!
Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - rockin ron November 16th 2008 10:41

Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - Hottscull November 17th 2008 1:39
That is an excellent offering there Tod. The song is a classic for sure and your cover was superb. You should sing more, ya got a nice voice bro.

The videotogaphy was top shelf too my friend.

5 star production....
Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - trippy November 17th 2008 4:04
thats one great song! i really enjoy´d listening to it.
i have to say thanks for posting it, otherwise i wouldent never have get to hear it.
Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - teegee November 17th 2008 4:38
Thanks for all the positive support friends. I have to admit that I was hesitant to do the vocals initially, but without them, well... there\'s just two chords. Lennon has always been my fav Beatle.

BTW, this is the first song Lennon took sole credit for. Prior to this they all said Lennon-McCartney.

Thanks again.
Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - Hottscull November 17th 2008 5:41
TWEEEEEEEEET!!!!!

upon futher review............

I gotta give ya \"6\" stars.... Not only a cool song, damn well performed. But an excelent lesson on several tecniques... You don\'t have to be all over the neck to make her sing.

Hmmmmmmm, I\'m thinking Tod could do a short explanation of the flat picking and hammers/pulls in use there..... would go along nice with that vid... I\'m just saying.
Re:Working Class Hero - Lennon - parispat November 17th 2008 6:35
Just a few things to say

1. WOW

2. you made that song yours.

3. you need to sing more.

4. One of the best videos (guitar playing, singing, production) that I have seen on the net. My friend, I would say that you have come a long way
except that it appears that you are already there.

5. Finally, your guitar sounds rich and warm. Just perfect.
Re:Working Class Hero - Lennon - teegee November 17th 2008 7:11
Geeze. You guys are too much. I appreciate all the positive vibes coming from you all. But it was just TWO CHORDS! (Although I really do like a lot of Lennon\'s stuff, so I\'m sure that helps.)

As to Scott\'s request for a hammer-on pull-off explanation... what can I say besides, \"hammer-on-pull-off\"? I donno. It just feels good so I play it that way.
Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - WardriveKeith November 20th 2008 8:47
Wow! Was this nice to have a set of headphones on and listen to! You, guitar, song ... ONE! Very sweet!
Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - WardriveKeith November 22nd 2008 9:22
Guess I'm feeling preachy and wordy this morning (sorry) but I had to also respond to the "But it was just TWO CHORDS!" posting you had too.

Not for you teegee cuz you "get it" but for more newbie folks. After years in bands the one thing I find myself telling newbies to performing is it's not the "newness" or "complexity" or "edginess" of the song choice that gets you the audience cheers and rememberence, but how much you "own it" and how well it comes together. It is more important to get to the "Wow that was a good rendition" then to just "Well that's a tough song." commentary.

A simple song "everybody does that" kinda song that is just done with excellence will always be remebered over a more complicated song done OK. A listener always knows what sounds "great" not really too much of "Gee that was 2 or 3 or 4 chords". This is very appropriate given the "Easy Rock Songs" article on the site. So many folks try to push the envelope by pushing the complexity of their choices. You proved teegee that a simpler choice that is well mastered always overrides! Just excellent!
Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - teegee November 22nd 2008 4:50
Keith:
I\'m glad you listened to the song with headphones. It was tweaked listening thru phonz, which is my usual modus operandi (I like to mez out with the phonz up pretty high).

Also, never consider yourself \"preachy\". It\'s all dialog we can share and learn something from. I appreciate your insight. In fact, in my opinion, what you have to say has a lot more credibility than simply stating a \"one liner\" just to post a comment. I believe that is the essence for what the video response forum should be... to teach and to learn. And for your comments, I thank you.

All that being said, I suppose my comment about this song being just two chords comes from a conversation I had with another NLGTV member not too long ago. It was stated that I was playing too much in my \"comfort zone\" and was intimated that that was becoming a yawner for this member. Well, I guess I\'m struggling to work outside the box considering my abilities, and singing is definately outside my comfort zone, as is playing acoustic riffage. So I\'m making a directional move to promote self-growth in a sense. Small steps at first for me... as I will continue to try to improve my overall skills and keep the troops from becoming bored.

Keith,

thanks for that post. you\'re right. What made the song so good was that it was not only \"owned\" by TG, but that no matter how many chords were involved, his playing was clearly heartfelt with excellent timing and feel. To me, that is the essence of playing any instrument.

Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - Cliff November 25th 2008 9:21
Damn that was simply beautiful. Beautiful, man! I really don\'t know what to so say cuz I\'m sitting here thinking about all the feeling that came out in your playing & singing. I think you got everything out of that song that there was to get. And then some! I mean really, it was like you were playing for me, and me alone. The emotion, the intimacy, fak man! That was a great ride, teegee, thanks for taking me on it.

Something you said earlier made me think that maybe you were referring to me. The comment about playing outside your comfort zone. I wanted to push you to play beyond the Am scale and I\'m very impressed that you responded with this song and the other in Cm. That\'s exactly what I was hoping to see. Bravo! But the whole yawner thing, nothing you play is a yawner. I\'d sit and watch you play Mary Had A Little Lamb if you played it, ya know? So maybe it was Mitch you were referring to. Cuz you can\'t trust that dude at all. *chuckle*

On a broader note however, I\'ve been pushing more than a few folks to expand themselves further. And I don\'t mean \"pushing\" in a bad way either. Quite the contrary. I think we all need pushing from time -to-time. I\'m pushing myself to sing, been working on Ron to play his open chords using his muscle memory, Scott to get a better practice routine that focuses less on actual songs, and so on. All for good, ya know? When I feel like I\'m up to speed singing I\'ll also start taking more looks at Knox and Trippy to see if I can help them too. Like I was telling Todd the other day, it\'s a tutoring mentality I think we could use here. I\'m no instructor, but I\'ve (and others here) been playing long enough to be qualified to tutor others and nudge them along. I think it\'s working too cuz I nudged you out of your Am stuff long enough for you to put out 2 of the best videos you\'ve ever done.
Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - teegee November 25th 2008 2:11
Thanks Cliff for your heartfelt words of inspiration.

I am making attempts to broaden my scope concerning my abilities, but I must say in all honesty, the key of A (or its minor cousin) can be considered the heart and soul of the blues simply because you\'re playing in the \"sweet spot\" on the neck of your guitar when you\'re in that key. Being a blues-oriented player from waaay back has influenced my style of playing for many years. When I had a voice (and I once did) I found my vocal range was most comfortable in A or A minor which I probably another reason why I hang around that key a lot. However, my voice has wained since my more youthful daze.

But I have no aversion to playing it other keys. And I do understand transposition, but find I really like the darkened moodiness of minors played in A, Bb or B. That may well be my signature tone, moody & dark. At least it is the case whenever I find myself noodling nothing in particular.

Everyone needs a little enouragement and prodding from time to time, and I am no different than anyone else. It helps develop skills that make you a more rounded musician. And I support that idea. So bear with me as I move laterally in my personal developement, because I will slip back into my comfort zone on occasion to revisit that from whence I came, only because it is what I am... moody & dark.
Re: Working Class Hero - Lennon - Cliff November 25th 2008 3:40
I love it when you say \"daze\"!

Too funny!... dark and moody. That\'s how I like my coffee and my women! Hrrrheeehrrrheee!

Nah, there\'s nothing wrong with playing in your comfort zone. Nothing at all. Keep doing it. Everyone should. But every now and then, try something else. S\'all I\'m sayin\', ya know? Ya did good! Now you can get back to serenading us all in Am again.

My interpretation of the 1975 B-side release. A song of alienation, social class and silent protest.
