I spent the night with a good friend putting new pups, wiring and electronics into my Epiphone Les Paul 100.. It was completely gutted. But OH MY GOD! I can taste, hear, see and feel the difference.
I got a complete Les Paul electronics kit from GFS, as well as a Loudmouth and a Bigmouth humbucker... The loudmouth is a whopping 14.5k in the bridge position, and, as you can probably hear, I haven\'t quite worked out how to record without it blowing out But shhh... I\'ve had a very long day.
What I DID want to show you is how balanced the sound is. Nothing special, just freestyling with some basic chords. I\'ve got the tone rolled completely off, and the highs are just shimmering above the mids and bass notes... It\'s not muddy at all (well maybe except for where I\'ve blown it out - again, i\'m so sorry about that). Compared to my old stock pickups, the live sound is ... wow! I used to play a chord, and it would sound crud and muddy even with the tone rolled fully on... So, I can definately hear a difference... SO worth $30 a pup and $25 for electronics (including 500k alpha pots).
Maybe I\'m just excited, but I think the guitar looks AMAZING now, and it sounds like a million bucks!
Busy busy days at work, so I\'ll try and run up a nice video for you this weekend... lol... once I\'ve tackled my \'blow out\' problem (and no, scott, that doesn\'t mean I ate something and it\'s disagreeing with me. lol!)
Take care, and enjoy.
Edit: here\'s a pic... sorry again, it\'s bad lighting - nighttime with the flash on tends to screw up chrome and black pictures. grr! But check out those huge polepieces... Mmm sexy guitar Black and chrome all the way through now. I\'ll take another pic tomorrow when I get home from work outside in the daylight
Like I said, I hope to get some better sound clips/pictures up this weekend. I was just excited, and the guys in the chatroom have been asking when they\'ll be installed.
Re: GFS Loudmouth Pups - MitchMarch 26th 2008 8:09 sounds great jess!!!!....now you have your own custom built lester.....but i think we need a song video to be a good judge of how it sounds....hehehe...
I know nothing about the electronics of a guitar. So I am learning from your posts. The guitar sounded awesome. Love that clean sound. You must be an electronic genius.
Re:GFS Loudmouth Pups - IanMarch 26th 2008 10:54 Sounded great Jess! They are a different looking pickup aren\'t they. Neat looking. Can\'t wait to hear what they sound like with distortion! So now Jess you have Frankensteined your guitar too and did it yourself. See guys installing pickups isn`t hard at all!
Re:GFS Loudmouth Pups - AncientMarinerMarch 26th 2008 1:33 Sounds good, jess. Now crank up the MetalZone and post another sample.
Re:GFS Loudmouth Pups - ToddMarch 26th 2008 3:47 Today I heard bells...that means another Guitar Tweaker got their wings Welcome to the club Jess..hehe...nice sounding pickup!
Re:GFS Loudmouth Pups - vaxwellMarch 26th 2008 5:39 Here\'s some more pics in daylight.
Actually, there is a question I have... The stock pickups were potted in parafen wax, and when we took them out, the pickup cavity with filled with bit of wax that had fallen off (probably why the pickups started sounding weak?) and a little of it got on the guitar\'s finish, so now it\'s kinda greasy and waxy and I hate that... There are also a few little wear and tear scuff marks over the finish... Does anyone have any tips about specific buffing products that they use to get rid of the wax, and buff off the tiny scratches? (Todd? I know you cleaned up your Evo recently before selling it to Ian...) I know I won\'t get them off completely without refinishing it, but I just thought I\'d ask Willing to put in elbow grease, but not use heavy machinery.
Re:GFS Loudmouth Pups - IanMarch 26th 2008 7:37 That\'s cool Jess I didn\'t know you changed out the knobs and the pick guard too! It looks great!
To answer your question, but first are the scratches just surface and not through the paint? If the are only minimal scars and scratches that are not deep, There are several products on the market that remove minor scratches. I have one here that is an automotive product that takes away surface scratches. The type where you wipe it on in a circular motion and let it dry then buff it with a soft cloth. It works great for guitars too. Anything that has a hard laquer, varithane, urithane finish it will work on as long as the scratches aren\'t too deep.
The stuff I use is called McGuire\'s Magic Scratch Remover and I have another here that is made by Turtle Wax and does the same thing. They are about 12 bucks for a tiny bottle. And that\'s Canadian so in Austrailia it will be 30 bucks for you lol.
Guitar looks fantastic! Why worry about scratches and such it adds character. lol
Re:GFS Loudmouth Pups - vaxwellMarch 26th 2008 7:44 Yeah, just little surface scratches, Ian. From where I\'ve dusted away dust/grime or rested my hand/arm against it whilst strumming. There\'s also a little unshined part in the finish that wasn\'t laquer properly at the factory... hopefully I can buff that up too?
I\'ll jump on ebay and see if I can find mcguires... Worth a try for $12! (or $30 )
There are two 1-2mm deep dints from where a friend\'s 3 year old son decided he wanted to have a jam, but I don\'t much mind about them. They\'re underneath near the pickguard bracket and you can\'t see them. Adds character lol
And thanks for the props. It really means a lot to me after all the effort I put in.
Re: GFS Loudmouth Pups - MusiccaMarch 27th 2008 1:00 Hey Jess, ya got a pretty sweet looking axe happening there. I really like the look of the new pups and the black pickguard !!! Cant wait for a song video to show off some distortion
Re:GFS Loudmouth Pups - JimmylegsMarch 27th 2008 6:44 Sounds great and looks awesome. I do like the looks now than the before. Nice job on the axe!
Re: GFS Loudmouth Pups - teegeeMarch 29th 2008 6:24 Sounds great Jess, and I really like the new look. But hey, the riff you were playing... I think you should use it as an intro to a metal tune. I can hear the distorted beginnings that follow that sweet clean intro. Just a suggestion.
Re: GFS Loudmouth Pups - vaxwellMarch 29th 2008 6:42 Thanks teeg... I can\'t what I played
You\'re welcome to write a metal riff if you\'d like. I\'d be interested to hear your continuation.
